Could new limits on aggravated murder hollow out Oregon’s death row?

As the days go by, it is becoming increasingly clear that the answer to the Oregonian’s question is YES. Of the 30 murderers on Oregon’s death row all but one will likely be released or become eligible for parole. And legal authorities say it is not possible to pass a new law that would change this.

Last time the death penalty was voted on, Oregonians approved it 56% to 44%. This reflects our biblical roots. Deuteronomy 4 tells us that the standards of God’s law are for all the nations.  Hebrews 2:2 tells us that the Bible’s punishments are just. The bible is quite clear that murder in the first degree is to be punished by the death penalty. Taken in context, many biblical punishments are in essence maximum penalties. But the verses on the death penalty for murder are different. They state “you shall surely” put the murderer to death. The judge has no option.

Were our lawmakers incompetent or deceitful? My bet is on the latter. But either way, we need to kick them out.
